The first inhabitants of this property were farmers who made a living from their vines, fields and animals.
Later, during the Canut Rebellion (an uprising among silk workers
in Lyon) the silk manufacturers
opened silk factories
here, which enabled them to continue producing silk while
at the same time
profiting from a local workforce prepared to work for low wages.
Thus it was that, bit by bit, the weaving workshop was created. First came "la dent" where we now have the conservatory, followed by a second part that was joined to the house.
The complete workshop housed, until the sixties, five weaving machines.
As advanced machines and synthetic fabrics appeared, the weaving industry declined and local home based skills disappeared. |
